Cancellation Policy

• Cancellations or transfers up to 21 days prior to the start date of a class are eligible for a refund contingent on the spot being filled from the waitlist, for a $50 admin fee.

• Refunds are not available within 21 days of a class start date.

• If a class must be cancelled due to an instructor or venue related emergency, illness, or weather event, all students will receive full refunds for their course, or the option to roll their registration onto a new class date.

• The same policies apply for private lessons, which have a non-refundable deposit instead of a cancellation fee.

Factors that shape our Policy:

1.  All the classes we offer are for small groups, designed so that students receive a higher degree of individualized attention.  Most of our courses are up to half the size of comparable ones, which means each student's presence and financial contribution to class is fully counted on.

2.  Prep for each course is extensive, and the same amount of work is undergone whether all students attend or not. Materials are expensive and prepared weeks in advance, and willow can only be soaked for weave-ability once.

3.  In almost all cases, craft courses are a leisure activity purchased with discretionary funds.  However, for a working craftsperson, the compensation earned from teaching a class is not dispensable and has often times already been spent by the time a class runs. Whether or not we are paid for this labor cannot be contingent on individual attendee's health or availability.

4.  Similarly, overhead for courses is high, and our ability to pay for venue and other bills cannot be contingent on individual attendee illness or emergency. We share in the risk by offering full refunds in an instructor or venue-caused cancellation, and need participants to share in it by taking responsibility for their own unpredictable situations that arise to cancellation. â€‹

5. This policy is standard when compared with cancellation policies of craft and folk schools offering similar programming. As an independent artist, I do not have the resources to cover cancellations that larger organizations and institutions have at their disposal, so it seems appropriate to match the policies of similar programs as a minimum.

Missing a long-anticipated course is always a disappointment! There are some things we just can't control in life, but also there are perhaps more ways we can prepare for a course than we may realize. One strategy I employ personally as a bare minimum - knowing there are almost no craftspeople who offer refunds for emergencies or illness - especially if I've invested a good deal in travel and tuition for a course, is to isolate where I'm able and mask full time in the week+ leading up to a course to help protect me from illness. To protect your course participation and investment, I recommend taking all the precautions available to you against illness, especially during the flu season / winter months!
