Lament of a Wing

A song for Palestine, written by Vanessa Degrassi

Lament of a Wing was written by Vanessa Degrassi for Eos 2024 in New Orleans. The song speaks to many sorrows, and notably the ongoing genocide in Palestine. In our choir, we sing this song to weave a spell for the safety, well-being, and freedom of the Palestinian people.

We include here the original arrangement written by Vanessa Degrassi, as well as the version arranged for Ember Choir by Anni Zylstra, which includes a third section well suited to beginner level singers. â€‹

This song is intended to be shared widely, and singers and directors are encouraged to lay out the song and its various sections however works best for your group. In place of a licensing fee for professional use of this piece, we ask that folks choosing to sing it with their choirs make a donation to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund or the Gaza Mutual Aid Collective.

Lyrics

Falling, lament of a wing

Torn and aching

A long sorrow to sing.

Bones of olive, scraping.

Our blood of earth,

Our hearts comfort,

Our hands tenderly,

Our tears run to the sea.

Bones of olive, strengthening.
